Dave developed a keen interest in movies and initiated his engagement in the film industry during his early years.

Upon fulfilling the necessary criteria for his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Manitoba, he joined forces with his brother Alan to co-author, oversee, and revise four films. As a result, he was able to meet the necessary requirements for the degree. Throughout his time there, he also obtained a minor in film studies. Furthermore, he obtained a degree in Creative Communications from Red River College, where he also successfully completed his studies.
