Imagine if Henry Cavill’s Superman and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor duked it out in an epic, destructive superhero fight. The idea, while unlikely, is not impossible. DC and Marvel director James Gunn answered a fan question about a crossover, and it turns out he has been asking for it.

Here’s what director James Gunn had to say about the possibility of a DC and Marvel crossover, where Henry Cavill and Chris Hemsworth fight it out.

I’ve casually talked to the powers-that-be at both Marvel & DC about it. I would love for it to happen. I don’t think it’s likely, but I don’t think it’s an impossibility either. THAT SAID, just constantly seeing crossovers & mashups is less enchanting to me than a strong story. https://t.co/mJ8GQzSI4j

The question of getting Henry Cavill suited up to battle Chris Hemsworth or any other Chris that is in the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes from a fan, Twitter user Miskanthe, who asked the filmmaker about a possible crossover. Between working with Marvel on Guardians of the Galaxy and DC on the upcoming The Suicide Squad, he has been talking to the “powers-that-be” at both companies about a crossover event.

The 54-year-old director said that it is not impossible to have it happen, but unlikely nonetheless. Even with it up in the air, he is not too much of a fan of “constantly seeing crossovers,” as he prefers a worthy narrative. He continued in his thread about how it is “disconcerting” that audiences want these mashups rather than a good standalone story. He said he spends most of his time focused on the characters and story.

If it were to happen, it might take some time before DC and Marvel can make an agreement. Again, this is a big if, but with Marvel busy on its shows and movies as it sets up its next saga since Endgame wrapped up its decade-long story, it now has to plant seeds and introduce new characters for the next epic tale for fans. Meanwhile, DC has a multiverse of movies that are a mixed bag of whether or not they connect to one another. The studio is even looking for a new Superman to replace Henry Cavill.

During his time as Superman, Henry Cavill starred in 2013’s Man of Steel, directed by Zack Snyder. He would continue his collaboration with the direction in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which was the debut of Ben Affleck’s Batman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. After the death of his daughter in the middle of production for Justice League, Avengers director Joss Whedon took over, resulting in a final product that both fans, critics, cast, and Snyder disliked. This year, HBO released the Snyder cut, a four-hour cut of the true vision for the ensemble cast of iconic heroes.

With his feet planted in both DC and Marvel, James Gunn could always nudge the heads of the two rivaling studios to make some kind of crossover. Whether that involves Henry Cavill punching Chris Hemsworth to the moon or the Avengers and Justice League join forces to fight a third party, it will remain a dream for fans unless something gets the ball rolling on this idea.

Even if it never happens, fans of DC and Marvel have plenty to look forward to. DC has The Suicide Squad on August 6 and then The Batman on March 4 of next year. Meanwhile, Marvel fans will be even busier with Loki currently running every Wednesday and then the rest of the slated series coming this year with Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, and What If…?. That does not include the movies like Black Widow on July 9, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on September 3, Eternals on November 5, and Spider-Man: No Way Home rounding out the year on December 17.
