In 1997, Carruth was drafted into the NFL Draft. He was drafted 27th overall in the first round by the Carolina Panthers. He also committed to a four-year contract with the Panthers. As a rookie, he played in 14 games. Carruth threw four touchdown passes and caught 44 passes for a total of 44 yards. He was later named to the all-rookie team for wide receivers.

He got injured in 1998 and had to sit out the entire season. In the first six games of the 1999 season, he made one appearance. He finished the season with 14 catches for 200 yards. When he was charged with murder, he was suspended from the Panthers. He was also fired by the NFL in December 1999.
