The talented radio host was born StephenAnthony Smith on October 14, 1967 in the Bronx in New York City, USA. He was the fifth of his parents’ six children. His parents were from Saint Thomas, the US Virgin Islands. Although he has kept his father’s name a secret from the media, he did mention that his father was a hardware store manager. Tragedy struck when he lost his older brother, Basil Smith, in a car accident in October 1992. Stephen A Smith grew up in the Hollis neighborhood of New York with his four older sisters and brother.
The sports analyst completed his undergraduate education at Thomas Edison High School in Queens, New York. He then attended the Fashion Institute of Technology after graduating from high school for a year. He then received a basketball scholarship to study at the renowned Winston-Salem University in North Carolina, where he graduated in 1991. While there, Smith showed off his writing skills by writing a column for The News Angus, the university newspaper. In one of his columns, he stated that his current college basketball coach, Clarence Gaines, who is also a Hall of Famer, should be relieved of his duties due to ill health.
Soon after graduating the Straightforward columnist, the columnist got his first gig as a staffer in the sports department of the Winston-Salem Journal before working as a reporter at the New York Daily News and Greensboro News and Record. From there he was hired as a reporter by the Philadelphia Inquirer in 1994, and went on to work as an NBA columnist and writer before being promoted to general sports columnist in 2003 from his previous position as an NBA writer.
After a while, Smith headed for greener pastures, and signed with the giant sports network, ESPN, as an NBA analyst for NBA Countdown. Shortly thereafter, Smith became the host of the show Quite Frankly With Stephen A. Smith. He is best known as a co-host of the popular ESPN sports show. First take along with Max Kellerman and Molly Qerim. Also, he became a fan favorite of the series due to his candid commentary.
In addition, Stephen A Smith kickstarted his radio career as the host of the weekly radio show on WEPN, New York City on April 11, 2005. He has previously served on several well-known radio stations including ESPN Radio, Fox Sports Radio and Sirius XM Radio.
The down-to-earth commentator made his first appearance on the small screen as a television reporter on the television series ABC. General Hospital in 2007 before starring in Chris Rock’s film I Think I Love My Wife the same year.
